Violet Crown Book Awards

Entries are now being accepted for the 2004 Violet Crown Book Awards.

Categories: fiction, nonfiction, and literary prose and poetry

The Writers' League of Texas and Barnes & Noble sponsor the Thirteenth Annual Violet Crown Book Awards to honor three outstanding published books written by Writers' League of Texas members.

Authors must be Writers’ League of Texas members, but may join when the entry is submitted.

The book must have been published between June 1, 2003 and May 31, 2004.

A fee of $20, a completed form, and two (2) copies of the book must accompany the entry.

All entries must be postmarked no later than May 31, 2004, or may be hand-delivered by May 31, 2004, to the Writers’ League of Texas office during regular office hours, noon to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays.

Collected works must be written by a single author.

Anthologies that include works of several authors are not eligible.

Prizes
$1,000 cash and trophy to the winner in each category !

Judges reserve the right to eliminate or substitute categories. Special citations may be presented for other books which show outstanding merit, uniqueness or design.


Teddy Children's Book Award

Entries are now being accepted for the 2004 Teddy Children's Book Awards.

Entries for the Seventh Annual Teddy Children's Book Award, sponsored by the Writers' League of Texas with support from Barnes & Noble Booksellers, will be accepted through May 31, 2004. Entries must have been published from June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004 and may include any children's book--fiction or nonfiction, picture book to young adult.

Authors must be Writers’ League of Texas members, but may join when the entry is submitted.

Bess Whitehead Scott Scholarships for Journalism Students

The Bess Whitehead Scott Journalism Scholarship was established in 1991 to honor Bess Whitehead Scott, a pioneer Texas journalist and writer who died in 1997 at age 107. She had a long career as a newspaper reporter and editor, publicist, teacher, ad agency manager and magazine writer. The $1,000 award is granted annually to a junior or senior university student pursuing a degree in journalism or a related field.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be currently enrolled at one of the following universities: a) Baylor University b) Sam Houston State University c) Texas A & M University d) Texas State University e) University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, f) University of North Texas
  2. Must be a Junior or Senior in the fall of the same calendar year as the scholarship's spring application and awards process takes place.
  3. Must be pursuing study toward a degree in journalism or a related field
  4. Must demonstrate financial need

Fields of Study

Journalism/Mass Communication/Radio-Television-Film or similar designation

Use of Scholarship

Money will be paid directly to the university for credit to the student account of the winner.

Deadline

The completed application form and attachments must be postmarked no later than the first Friday in April to be considered for funding beginning with the Fall semester of that calendar year.

Scott Scribes Scholarship (Writers Over forty years of age)

The Scott Scribes Scholarship was established in 2000 to honor Bess Whitehead Scott, a pioneer Texas journalist and writer who died at age 107. She had a long career as a newspaper reporter and editor, publicist, teacher, ad agency manager and magazine writer. The $1,000 award is granted annually to a woman or man age 40 or over pursuing study or a degree in journalism, writing or a related field. The scholarship program is intended to provide financial assistance to further educational objectives of individuals either employed or making career transitions in these areas.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Current resident of the State of Texas.
  2. Demonstrate interest in pursuing study toward degree or career advancement in journalism, writing or a related field.
  3. Age 40 or over on date, month and year of application deadline (April 2, 2004).
  4. Demonstrate financial need

Fields of Study

  1. Journalism/Mass Communication
  2. Creative writing
  3. English composition/writing skills
  4. Public relations/advertising
  5. Accredited course work for professional development/career advancement in journalism/writing/related field, including internet-based activities.

Use of Scholarship

Work toward accredited college/university degree, Continuing education, Writing residencies/internships College/university accredited online or liberal studies programs not requiring on-site attendance.

Deadline

To be considered for the $1,000 scholarship for the school year beginning Fall 2004, students must postmark completed applications by April 2, 2004.


Mozelle Memoir Contest

Prize: $500 and publication

Deadline: February 15

$10 Entry Fee

Entries must be original memoirs, personal essays or stories based on the writer's autobiographical experiences and must be written in first person narrative form.

Entries must be previously unpublished and not currently accepted for publication; first-time writers are strongly encouraged to enter.
* Entries must be limited to 3,000 words or less.
* The contest is open to Texas residents only.
* All entries must be accompanied by an entry form.

Other information

The contest will be judged by a panel of three out-of-state professional writers.
Manuscripts will not be returned. Do not send your original copy; keep that one for yourself. The Writers' League of Texas will confirm receipt of entries only if a self-addressed stamped postcard is included.

The winner's memoir and the memoirs of all finalists will be published. Please do not submit an essay if you do not want the story published for personal reasons.

Winners will be notified in the spring and recognized at a special event in May.
