1. Steve Vera is a
board member of Austin International Poetry Festival. (Thanks,
Steve, for helping me figure out how to include the diacritical
marks).
Monwa
Monwa es mi diva,
desearé
Por Ella, me tropiezo
en
Este Chaparral lleno de
víboras.
Por Ella, me arrastro
en esa orilla
De peñascos
vibrantes en las nubes.
Sus olas eroden mi
alma: Ella me sombrea
Del sol de virtud
Por Su luna de néctar.
Aunque subo la montaña
De la luz de la vida,
no temeré
Perfección:
porque crezco en Ella;
Sus cuevas y cañones
me endurecen.
Me da esperanza que mi
última lágrima
Ablandará las
escamas de mis enemigos.
Sus tormentas de arena
irritan sus ojos.
Por Ella, busco fuentes
suaves
En estas dunas áridas
para que miren.
Sin duda, la aventura
me empujará
Dentro de Su volcán
para siempre.
Y adoraré en la
matriz de Monwa
Hasta que todas las
estrellas sean novas.
Monwa
Monwa is my diva; i
shall desire.
For Her, i stumble
through
This snake infested
chaparral.
For Her, i crawl that
edge
Of vibrant cliffs on
clouds.
Her waves erode my
soul: She shades me
From the sun of virtue
For Her moon of nectar.
Though i climb the
mountain
Of the light of life, i
will not dread
Perfection: for i grow
in Her;
Her caves and canyons
harden me.
She makes me hope my
last tear
Will soften the scales
on my enemies.
Her sandstorms sting
their eyes.
For Her, i comb these
arid dunes
For soothing springs to
help them see.
Surely, adventure shall
always
Thrust me into Her
volcano.
And i will worship in
Monwa's womb
Till all the stars are
novas.

Oda a una Esponja
Griega
Grecia.
Sueño
inalcanzable.
Entre mis manos
la enorme esponja
rubia
huele a
Mediterráneo,
ese salado
perfume de arena
y pequeñas
olas cristalinas
besándose.
Grecia.
Los nombres de tus
islas
me acarician.
Santorini.
Creta.
Epidauros.
Tus infinitas puestas
de sol
paganas y cristianas
translucen mis
párpados.
Las sombras de tus
antiguos heroes
caminan sobre el
escenario de mi imaginación.
Me detengo en las
ruinas
de los palacios
derrumbados de Minos,
mis oídos
abofeteados
por
los bramidos enfurecidos
del Minotauro.
Arriba el cielo se
arrellana, el arco del horizonte
un bostezo perezoso.
El calor me sofoca con
su jadeo de bronce.
A mis pies, desde la
tierra seca, agrietada,
las hierbas tiritan
suavemente, sin viento,
susurrando
ancianas glorias.
¡Grecia!
Tu nombre resbala sobre
mi lengua
como miel
silvestre.
Me caen lágrimas
de nostalgia inventada
y la pobre esponja,
tan hambrienta como yo,
las devora,
acordándose
de
la sal
de
su mar imposible.
Ode to a Greek Sponge
(Translation - Author)
Greece
Unattainable dream.
In my hands
the enormous blonde
sponge
smells of the
Mediterranean
that salty
perfume of sand
and little
crystal waves
kissing each other.
Greece.
The names of your
islands
caress me.
Santorini.
Crete.
Epidauros.
Your infinite sunsets
pagan and
Christian,
shine through
my eyelids.
The shades of your
ancient heroes
march across the
stage of my imagination.
I pause in the ruins
of the toppled
palaces of Minos,
my ears
buffeted
by the
furious bellowings
of
the Minotaur.
Overhead the sky
stretches, the vault of the horizon
a lazy yawn.
The heat suffocates me
with its bronze panting.
At my feet, from the
dry, cracked earth
weeds rustle
softly, without a wind,
whispering
ancient glories.
Greece!
Your name slides across
my tongue
like wild honey.
Tears of invented
nostalgia fall from my eyes
and the poor
sponge, as hungry as I,
devours
them,
remembering the salt
of
its impossible sea.

"Poetesses" -
are you joking, or are you still, despite a seeming
contemporary
consciousness, using such a silly, awkward, antiquated term?
Even in conservative
Ireland and even among the over 65s a poet is a poet.

Stazja, dearest...
I need your help and
I'm pleased to say it does involve poetry.
My trip to New Zealand
was unbelievable ! It's the greatest place in the
universe.
Apparently there are
some Kiwis equally impressed with me. I've been
invited to play at the
Whare Flat Folk Festival in Dunedin in January,
and I (please cross
your fingers on my behalf !!! ) hope to be invited
to play at the much
larger Sweetwaters' Festival about a month later
near Auckland. For the
geographically challenged, those two communities
are at opposite ends of
the country. I will be taking my music ( and
some poetry )
to...ooohhh...approximately 40 thousand people, if I get
an invite. Further, I'm
doing radio in both Dunedin and Christchurch.
This trip is on a
shoestring budget. I will lose money by the time I;m
done, but I could not
pass up this opportunity ! No, I don't want cash,
what I'm hoping is that
someone in A.I.P.F has friends, family or some
connections in NZ. I
need places to overnight, and clubs that
would feed me and put a
few quid in the hat for me to play. Couch
space and coffee are
all I need, and I'll make it worth their while.
This is an odd, and
presumptous request, I know...but this is a big
chance and I'm
determined to pull every string I can ! Would you get
the word out for me ?
The album should be out
in December. It's called "Surf's Up" and has one
poem on it, over the
objections of my producer.
Thanks ! Hope all is
well !
