1. Michael Riversong is
a harpist/cowboy poet from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
GIFT OF THE EAGLE
by Michael Riversong
",,,a gift to the
good people of Germany, where i have travelled and found warm
hospitality"
Good hearts
throughout the land
Those who know the Wolf
belongs in the forest
and the Eagle in the
sky,
you are called to be
true to yourselves.
Today we see another
Wolf
rising over the land,
devouring
women by using
electricity
children by using
chemicals
and strong men by using
hopelessness.
Today it is hard to see
the Eagle,
when our eyes are
focused
on turmoil in the land.
Yet the good hearts
always know
the right way to live;
they only need to know
who the Wolf
really is.
Make sure to see the
target,
make sure it is the
right target,
then do what is most
unexpected.
With kindness,
gently bring the Wolf
to Berchtesgarten
and take him to the
tower of the Eagle's Nest.
Let him see, for
perhaps the first time in ages,
the freedom of the sky
and the space in the
land.
Give him time to know,
little by little,
what he has done.
Let him paint houses,
and wash walls,
until he knows there is
a Universe here --
A Universe filled with
good people
who love their
children,
who protect the women,
who find strength in
the flight of the Eagle.
Only then can the Wolf
enjoy the pleasures of
the forest
and be sane again.

guitarist/vocalist with Kymystry -- performing Mondays at The Cockney
Rebel in St. Pete, Florida.
Too Many Colors
As I sit out by the
lighthouse
and watch the waves
roll in
I hear the grace of
silence
and the whisper of the
wind
I searched the whole
world over
in the corner of my eye
I saw the starlights
sparkle
as the ocean kissed the
sky
there are too many
colors
the shadows softly
fading
as the morning fills
the sky
too many colors
with the mellow feel of
blueness
and the passion of the
wine
A thousand different
questions crossed upon my mind
as I walked the pebbled
seashore
to see what I could
find
The waves overlapping
the stillness in the
air
the presence of you
near me
even though you're not
there
There are too many
colors
the pastels slowly
running
the canvas standing
bare
Too many colors
with the mellow feel of
blueness
and the passion of the
wine...
of the wine.

3. Jimmy Smith, in
addition to composing, and ghostwriting Bubba's irreverent
finger-rated movie reviews, raised Uncle Bernie from the
good-riddance dead,,, well, you kinda had to be there...
Sunman
The sunman throws his
shadow on the water
and the moonmaiden puts
a spell on the sea
there was an old man,
gave his life to his daughter
and a young girl that
fell in love with me
if the highway didn't
twist through the mountains
and the river didn't
run to the sea
if a poor man couldn't
drink from the fountain
what would that young
girl ever want with me
watch the fields of
waving wheat
stand at the end of a
lonely street
shout your name to the
lazy sky
and wipe the raindrops
from your eyes
hear the laughing
sandman sing
ride the twisting
almost wind
wait for true love that
will bring
the sorry sunman back
again
have a taste of life
everlasting
catch a ride on a fast
moving train
watch the rodeo clown
in the corner
crying out like he's
almost in pain
when you smile you
begin the beginning
when you run you get
nowhere fast
hold on to nothing till
your fingers are bleeding
stretch out your good
times, just to make them last
once the sunman cast
his face in forgiveness
and the moonmaiden
wrapped her presence in silk
all the rumors that had
sailed in the sunset
were watered down with
her mothers milk
are you over your last
re-construction?
are you done with your
former good byes?
when you lend your
devise to destruction
it can leave a sharp
pain in your eyes
there are those who
understand
why you offer up your
hand
and the demon silver
line
knows if he is yours or
mine
ever trusting gentle
wave
gives you good things
that you crave
beckoning your homing
bird
and wringing half
truths from these words
tangled in his web of
lies
the sorry sunman sits
and cries

7. From Carol Koss in
Oklahoma:
Art - at its best - is
transformational and redemptive. Artists of a Different Caliber is a
non-profit exhibition that will bring guns to Oklahoma City - Guns
transformed by the visions of metalsmiths into catalysts for
non-violence. These artists come armed with talent, courage, and
commitment.
Poets are Asked to Bite
the Bullet: This fall, IAO will host Artists of a Different Caliber,
a metalsmith exhibit where guns and bullets have been turned into
works of art. They have taken seriously the admonition,"And
they shall beat their swords into ploughshares." These artists
are seeking poetry that speaks to the issue of alternatives to
violence, poetry that uses words against violence, rather than in
violence. If you are interested in contributing poetry to this
exhibit, send it via e-mail to me (cpkoss_at_aol.com) or to Gael Sloop
(SloopPhelps_at_compuserve.com). Deadline (or, life line) for
submitting work is August 15th.
We have been receiving
poems from all over the country (and Australia) for this project. We
may be putting them into a small volume for the exhibit. The reading
of these poems will take place at 8:30 p.m. at Harvey's (19th and
Portland) right after the opening at IAO (Sept.11th). Work (or
play), by poets unable to attend, will be read by volunteers.
Welcome to all you new
subscribers. If you want to submit poems, announcements, chap books
listings, send info in the body of e-letters.
Anyone wanting off the
mailing list, e me.
Support poets, buy
chapbooks.
Much love,
Stazja

Dear Staz,
I am so sorry I missed

sent it. Rats! Hope it was wonderful. It was nice seeing you and
your 29 years of lovliness the other day at the church. Hope you are

I've been reading your
mail and think is great. The activities that you
promote in Austin are
wonderful. Maybe you would like to program someday
something related to
LAtin American Poetry in the US, poets that write in
Spanish and for some
reason are living in the US. These can be done with
translations into
English, and a dialogue with the public. Please, send
me your address and
i'll send my latest book recently published in Lima,
Peru. I teach in The
Bilingual Creative Writing Program at UTEP.
