Dear Poets,
Greetings from Florida!
If you are receiving
this newsletter for the first time, someone gave me your e mail
address to add to the mailing list. It might have been you.
Thanks to everyone who
has sent such positive response to this weekly e newsletter.
After attending the
Showcase of Austin Venues at Quackenbush's on November 15, a poet
from New York wrote this: " I certainly got to see, in the few
hours I was there, a much wider cross section of the poetry life in
Austin than I would have
seen any other time.
One thing is for sure the poets in Austin are a hell
of lot more organized
than we are in New York! "
I attended a read at
Samantha's Bookstore in St. Petersburg, Florida, last Wednesday.
These guys have definitely heard of the Austin poetry scene; several
of them are coming to Austin for the National Slam in August.
Ok, here is what is
happening this week:
Tuesday, December 2 -
Ruta Maya, an APAL venue, hosted by Laura Moliter. Open mic sign up
at 6:30 p.m. 4th and Lavaca.
Also Tuesday:
The Electric Lounge
(302 Bowie) is now hosting a WEEKLY open mic every
Tuesday, 8 p.m.
Standard open mic etiquette (e.g. signing up) applies.
Gen's poetry slam is
still running like clockwork, and is the LAST Tuesday
of every month. On
these evenings, the slam replaces the open mic, but all
poets are invited to
slam for the $50 cash prize.
Hope this is helpful.

Somers-Willett
Wednesday, December 3 -
Rio Grande Coffee Haus, 2222 Rio Grande. Open mic, signup at 8 pm.
Saturday, December 6 -
Quackenbush's, 2120 Guadalue, an APAL venue, hosted by John Hawk.
Open mic, signup at 3 p.m.
Poetry announcements:
Austin International
Poetry Festival is registering for the 1998 Festival, deadline for
registration is January 15, application fee is $10, for more
information by e mail: anina_at_arts.state.tx.us or aipf98_at_aol.com or
call (512) 918-AIPF
And for the feature
poem this week (since no APAL poets submitted one), I give you the
first in a series of Larry Jaffe's "He/She Java Series",
included on his poetry website at www.lgjaffe.com This is a
shameless plug, but check out the website
:-)
he she java
(with deference to e.e.
cummings)
he drank carefully
she drank willfully
he paused to deliberate
she was on her second
cup
he took a slow and
steady sip
she gulped deeply
he drank ruefully
she drank wistfully
his eyes never met her
her eyes wished to be
introduced
his arms folded in
consternation
her arms open in
friendship
he wished he could
leave
she wished he would

Thanks for the poetry
and the update from Florida. Hurry back, we miss you!
(And bring some Florida
poets. We like variety (even if we envy their tans).
The Jaffe poem, as
usual, was great.
Have fun in Florida. We
had a beautiful weekend here, but we're heading into
gloomsville (rain
expected all week) so you aren't missing anything,
weatherwise.
See ya.

CRUM!!!
I had attempted various
times to get into the computer lab on campus late
last week and over the
weekend. It obviously didn't work. ANd now that I
am here, I see that you
have already sent out the email newsletter for
apal. AND, also, now
that I am here, with the intention of sending you a
copy of the poem you
requested, I realize that I have the wrong one of the
two about homeless
folks. (Expletive.) SO! Lost cause, eh? Perhaps I
will see you sometime
this week at one of the readings you have announced.
In which case, I wil
lhave a copy of the poem, in case you want to use it
in the future. If not,
well, maybe another one, another time?
Thanks for putting me
on the list for the newsletter. And thanks for the
work you do on the n.l.
-- I bet you don't get paid for the time you spend
on it... So, a mere
thanks is what I can give, though sometimes I know
that helps.
I will definitely be
getting more involved with the readings etc. after the
holidays. Also, I am
planning to start up a reading/workshop at the
beginning of next year.
So, I will let you know about that.
Hope you had a good
weekend/thanksgiving. Talk to you/meet you soon, I hope.
Molly
